Be the pig not the chicken
Posted Under: Success, positive emotions, will power
I was talking to a freind this morning. He was asking for my advice about what to do as his hands have arthritis and he needs to change his profession. I asked him what other skills he had. He said he was interested in a certain field.
From his voice and body language I could tell that he was not that sure about this field and he was just fishing to find something which would land in his arms ready made. In the current economic situation one cannot be passive. So I asked my friend if he had ever had bacon and eggs for breakfast.
He replied, “Yes. But not for a long time but I like it a lot.”
I told my freind, “When you eat bacon and eggs, the chicken is interested, but the pig is committed.”
So in any venture be the pig not the chicken. When you are committed, you do whatever it takes. You continue even when you feel dejected. You persist in spite of setbacks.
As I have repeated a few times in this blog, bravery is not, not having fear (that’s being foolhardy and stupid) but continuing on in spite of your fears. Being positive (I write about positive humanistic psychology) is not about not feeling dejected but feeling down and smiling in spite of that and thinking, “This too shall pass.”
As I’m writing this I’m also getting ready for a major meeting I’m going to tomorrow and I’m burning some ultra forgiveness cds as business cards to give to people. I’m tired and the printing went wrong. So I’m in a state of funk and I’m smiling.
So remember commitment is doing whatever it takes and being interested is just that.

I don’t have time to write a full post on this, because I have to rush to a women in technology conference. However, yesterday my friend insisted that he needed more time with me. I said I would be in the gym at 5:00 a.m. and he said he would see me then to ask for my advice.
I was running late in burning my ultra forgiveness CDs for the seminar, and got to bed at midnight last night and under normal circumstance would have slept in till 6:00 or so. But I had promised my freind so I got up at 4:00 to be in the gym at the allotted time, even though knowing my friend’s history I was pretty sure he would not turn up.
And I was right. Point being I was the pig and he the chicken about an issue which concerned him. Next time I’ll not be so available. As I wrote in the post on Karma, each action you take has some consequence.
