Breaking your fast
Posted Under: Success, diets, fasting, friendship, health tips, healthy diet
Earlier I wrote that I’m doing a fast to detoxify and balanced my body and mind. I mentioned that ending the fast is very important and a spiritual quest.
The last time I ate was last Sunday at around seven so by lunch time today it will be a three and a half day fast. Tomorrow evening we will be going out to a charity function where there will be food.
It is important to break your fast a while (at least twenty four hours) before eating out as this allows your body to get back into normal eating habits. When you break your fast it is important to do it slowly eating very little at first. It is like when astronauts return to earth after being in the zero gravity of space they have to take it easy in the beginning. The same is true of your digestive system. You fast to clear and clean it. After a three day fast it is no longer used to large meals.
Moreover, fasting to me is a spiritual quest so I mediate a lot and do forgiveness before ending the fast. Next I thank every being (sentient or not) as well as all inanimate things for proving me sustenance and nourishment.
After all God, Nature, The Spirit or whatever makes sense to you (I like the term Ultimate Reality since I don’t know what it is and this way I don’t define it or give it a name) created this universe (according modern physics there may be infinite universe) in a big bang about thirteen and a half billion years and set the laws of nature in a way that the universe would evolve in a friendly way hospitable to life.
So much cosmic evolution had to take place before the higher elements needed for life could be formed. If the universe had been created just slightly in a different way life would not be possible. Then stars had to go supernova so that the heavy elements that make up earth and the other planets could be formed. The solar system had to be born, And finally life had to start on earth and evolve to homo sapiens sepiens (our specific species).
About four hundred thousand years ago our ancestors were a small band of homo genus living in Africa. So every human being living today is an African by decent and each others brothers and sisters and we are all star children.
I meditate and think about all the above before breaking my fast.
Finally I have a plate of twenty, thirty different things – an almond, a single pistachio, a slice of one variety of apple, a slice of another variety of apple – you get the idea different but totally tiny portions.
I take one piece say the almond (low glycemic index) and look at it. I notice everything about it. How it looks, feels, smells. Then I thank everyone living today and in the past for providing me with this wonderful gift. Finally I take a small bite into the almond. My mouth is watering as write this as there are a few hours left before I have time to break my fast. I have to listen to my Ultra Forgiveness and Aligning Yourself with the Universe CDs first. But before I do that I have some work left to do.
The point is that the food tastes so great, so real, so fantastic. With each bit I thank God, Nature, and all beings, and things. It takes about an hour or so to eat that first plate of tiny morsels. I don’t eat for another hour or so and then slowly can eat normal food (still in smaller portions than normal).
