Change your if to when

The words you use make a huge difference to whether you achieve your goals or not. Using wimp out words like if and try imply failure. Strong words like when imply successfully achieving you goals.

In fact your words can change your attitude to anything. If you call something as pain (or your doctor says something dumb like, “You won’t feel any pain”) or discomfort makes a big difference in your perception of the same event. In fact good doctors like my dentist say you’ll feel a little pinch – thus affirming your physical feelings and reframing it as a small pinching feeling.

I wish to write about the difference between the words if and when as applied to goal achievement (not I do not call it goal setting – this again is the good selection of words – goal setting implies we have goals which we may achieve or not but goal achievement promises the goals being reached rather than merely set).

Think about the following two sentences:

• If I stop smoking I’ll buy myself a good watch.
• When I stop smoking I’ll buy myself a good watch.

Which one is more likely to induce you to achieve your goal of stopping smoking.

While I’m writing about goals note that I use the words stop smoking or smoking cessation but not quit smoking. This is because stop and cessation are neutral words while quit has the negative connotation of being a quitter.

In the same way I use the term weight reduction or weight management and not weight loss with my clients. Weight loss implies being a loser and when you lose something you search for it and often find it and then some – hence the yo-yo diet syndrome.

I use the term weight loss here on the web site since most people use the term and search for it that way. But if you want to mange your weight to your ideal (up or down) drop the term loss when talking about weight issues.
