De-Weed your mind

I recently wrote a post about the health producing effects of weeding your garden . I came up with the idea that we could also remove the weeds from our minds.

So what are some of the weeds which grow in and ruin our minds:

  • Bad habits.
  • Negative attitude.
  • Negative emotions.
  • Resentments.

I’m sure I may have left out quite a few others. We each have some of these weeds. One for me is that I eat rather fast. I even know what caused this.  I went to a British boarding school and if you did not eat fast you would not get seconds and you would be hungry.

Unfortunately Freud was wrong about this. Many negative behaviors are simply aquired habits and anyway, mere knowledge and understanding of the roots of a behavior does not change it.

So for today, I will have the intention of eating slowly. I’ll eat small bites and will chew well and pause before taking the next bite. The purpose in this is not just to end up eating less quickly but to make my will stronger.

One of my mentors suggested that you do something meaningless on purpose each day just to strengthen your will power. He sugested for example having twelve small bolders in your garden and each morning moving the stones from one side of the garden to the other (this assumes you have a garden which many in big cities do not). But, you get the point.

So for at least one day a week, search your mind for some weeds and prove to yourself you can be in charge by de-weeding your mind for one day.

Today, I’ll eat slowly.
