Declare victory and go home
Posted Under: Success, old post, psychology, truths
This is part of a series of posts I wrote about two years ago on a different website. I thought I had lost all these posts but I manged to find them so I’ll be posting them in the next few days:
I was trying to alter the look of a previous post. It was good enough, but I wanted it to look better. I did different things for five minutes and noticed that I was not getting anywhere.I had the choice of becoming frustrated and obsessive, or understanding that things need only be good enough.
I remembered the saying “let’s declare victory and go home” from a different era (”PLus que ca change… Plus que la meme – “The more things change… The more things remain the same).
I decided it was good enough and time to write the next post.
In software engineering we had a saying the first 90% of the project takes 100% of the allotted time. The next 5% the next 100%. The next 2.5% the next 100%. You get the idea. There is soon a question of diminishing returns. trying to hard leads to perfectionism which in turn leads to paralysis and procrastination.
By the way if you want to write, get a blog. There are plenty of free blog services where you can get a blog of your own. Get one and intend to write at least one post a day no matter how short.
