Excuses, excuses, excuses
If you have to say no to a request or cancel an appointment at the last moment it is best not give any reasons at all. However, if you have to give a reason, give just one even though in reality there may be a plethora of reasons in your own mind.
Suppose you were supposed to visit a friend, and your car is in a bad shape, and it’s raining, and you are late, and you are having a headache, and you feel a bit under the whether, and…, and, and.
Now you may know that it is the combination of these factors which make it impossible for you to go that party that you were looking forward to. When you phone your friend with all your reasons they will imagine you are making up excuses.
It is best to excuse yourself without giving any reason just to apologize sincerely. If you must give a reason for the cancellation select one and only one and mention that.
I’ll write a post about the principles of assertiveness training and your human rights later on. According to the great psychologist Albert Elise you can always change your mind at any time over anything.
Now, when you are assertive and change your mind you need to accept the consequences of your decision – in fact whether you like it or not, whether you know it or not you always accept the consequences of all your actions. It is the law of karma – the difference is whether you do it lovingly and gracefully or by being dragged into the reality of cause and effect (karma.)
Changing your mind and saying no when you want to say no is one of your assertiveness rights and you do not need to allow yourself to be manipulated into doing something against your present wishes just because earlier you had said otherwise.
However, in order to keep friends and influence people, it is much better to think about whatever demands are made to you and say, “No,” if you cannot do something rather than saying, “I’ll try,” which typically means, “No, but I don’t want to hurt your feelings and I’m a chicken-shit!”
