Fast to detox and balance

Note: Talk to your physician before undertaking any fast. We are each different with different physiological needs. Some people can do a full fast – others may do partial fasts like a juice fast or just cutting out the fats or some other element from their food.

I started a fast yesterday to undo the excesses of thanksgiving and clean out my system through a detox. Every year I do about four fasts. Each fast lasts between three days and seven days.

I have a calorie fast which means I drink plenty of water and teas (black, green, and various detox herb teas). It is very important to keep yourself hydrated when fasting. This helps with the detoxification process.

An important aspect of fasting is that it is not a way of reducing your weight in the long run.  In the short term your weight will go down but as soon as you break the fast the weight will come back. Now it can be used to counter overindulgence after a holiday.

For me one of the most important aspect of any fast is the spiritual aspects of the fast. When I fast I meditate more. I’m more thankful and I think more about the connectedness of the all.

I think about everything that is involved (from the big bang till today) to bring us the food which is on our tables.

When I break the fast I thank all involved. The thanking can take from five minutes to half an hour and detoxes the soul.

So cleans your mind/body/soul/spirit by fasting.

Few points I wish to add:
1) Often when I’m fasting I do take some fiber. This is optional but makes life easier for me.
2) Day one of a multi-day fast is the hardest. It becomes easier as you get used to the fast.
3) Don’t go shopping for food when hungry.
4) No matter how long the fast, once I decide when I’m going to break the fast – the last few hours end up being tough for me.
6) These last few hours are very spiritual and I feel a fantastic natural high.
