Fourteen ways to find a new field of work

In these days more and more jobs are disappearing never to return. And many people are losing their jobs and need to look for new fields.

I wrote earlier about being committed. I’m not saying that when you are committed you’ll immediately find a new job but that it helps. When you are totally in love with a new field and you’ll do whatever it takes you’ll persist and when you persist you will in time succeed. In the words of the great American philosopher Woody Allan, “Ninety five percent of success is just showing up,” and when you know what you want you’ll show up.

So here are some simple ways of learning what you want – it is important to do this exercise one a day and in your own handwriting:

  1. Write 101 successes that you have had in your life. Starting from the fact that you won the sperm race, for more details click here.
  2. Write the following sentence and the answer 101 times. “What do I want?” and then write the first thing that comes to your mind. It is OK to get the same answer more than once. Just keep asking the question and answer the question with the first thing thing that comes to mind.
  3. Write down 101 wishes. Now in this case you can just write anything and everything. You can wish for world peace and in the next sentence for an ice cream. There is a slight difference between your wishes and your wants.
  4. Write down what you would do if you had exactly one year left to live healthily and then die. Write at least a page.
  5. Write down what you would do if you had exactly one day left to live healthily and then die. Write at least a page.
  6. Write down what you would do if you had at least fifty years left to live healthily and then die. Write at least a page.
  7. Write you obituary and epithet. The above four question help you really concentrate your mind in what you like.
  8. Write down all the things you were ever good at. This includes things from the time you were a tiny tot to this moment. Write all your hobbies. No skill is too large or too small.
  9. Write down a list of everyone you know and you have known. You may use sites like linkedin, facebook and so on to connect with people you have not contacted for a long, long time.
  10. Visit a library and spend at least an hour and look at all sorts of non fiction books and see what you like.
  11. Look on job sites and or newspapers for work that you like and notice what job titles look attractive (even if you are not qualified for the job at this time).
  12. Visit your local junior college and talk to their career placement office.
  13. While you are that JC enroll in a class, any class. This gets you back into the learning mode.
  14. Attend a job fair, but before you need to rewrite your resume and you can use some of the above discoveries to improve your resume. For example you can use what you found from question eight and question one to help improve your resume.
