Gardening is another of those exercises which use all the muscles in the body and is mostly low impact (except if you were digging some holes as I did today). It also makes one feel good as one is looking after living beings. This aspect is so important that when they gave even a single plant to old people in hospitals, their life expectancy went up compared to the control group. It was as though knowing that a living being relied on them for life, they willed themselves to live longer.
Having to be responsible (even for a tiny bit) for pets, lowers ones blood pressure and resting heart rate even more.
Back yo the advantages of gardening – when you work in nature you absorb Chi (bioenergy) and the fact that you are growing something beautiful (flowers) or tasty (fruits and vegetables) make you feel even better.
Another advantage of gardening is that you beautify your surroundings and is a kind of remodeling on the cheap. Moreover, being outside and more in tune with nature you notice the passage of time and the seasons much more and this makes you feel better and your life more worthwhile.
When you garden with a loved one this improves the relationship as you are sharing in looking after other living beings and also you spend quality time together in nature away from TV, Internet, cell phones and other distraction. Also if you have pets they can roam around outside in safety in your presence.
Also all the bending up and down helps with flexibility.
On the downside – non so long as you are careful:
- Makes sure you drink plenty of water and keep yourself hydrated. The same way as your plants need water, you need plenty of water when outside.
- Do not over do it. Gardening is a form of exercise and too much of a good thing is too much and can lead to injury.
- Use a sunscreen if outside for a long time.
- Knowing that you did not use any pesticides may tempt you to eat your harvest, without washing. I suggest you wash any fruits and vegetables even from your own garden.
