Getting better all the time
Unfortunately in the USA we have been concentrating too much on winning, rather than being good. We have heard that winning is the only thing. I don’t know about you, but when I play chess against a weaker opponent, I typically win but I don’t enjoy those games. Some of my favorite games have been when I may have lost against a better player but I knew I was playing well.
We need to understand that in life we are not in competition with anyone else but ourselves. The only thing that matters is that we get better all the time (or in some things we deteriorate more slowly than we would with our increasing age).
Once we understand that and we act on it, we can be happy and do our best to improve no matter how skilled we are. One way of improving is to get feedback. Therefore whenever I give seminars, I either video tape or at times when that’s not possible I’ll at least audiotape myself.
Afterward, when a reasonable amount of time has gone by (so I’m no longer emotionally attached to the outcome) I’ll review the video or audio with the soul intention of how could I do it better?
This is a good question to ask about most things we do. Wait when enough time has gone by and review the situation without blame asking yourself, “Next time, how can I do it better?”
Today, I listened to a lecture I gave to some Ph.D. students recently on hypnosis and NLP (neuro-linguistic programming). The lecture received good review from the students but listening to it today allows me to do it better next time.
I noticed a few places where the pace was slow and the fat can be trimmed but in other places I need to explain more. If I had not listened to the audio I would not know that.
One good way to review your regular daily tasks is to go over them at night just before going to sleep, remembering all you did during the day from the time you got up and just ask the question on any action if you could improve it next time.
I’m writing an iphone/ipad self improvement app. I need you help:
