The hardest are the best

And no, if you are thinking about what I’m thinking: “Let’s take our minds out of the gutter!”

Actually I’m writing about fasts and other tests of will power.

When I was a teenager and I went to a British boarding school, I had a freind  who used to offer us sweets. It was very kind of him since we never had as much calories as our growing teenage bodies needed and we were always hungry. The thing about my friend, Stanley, was that he would offer us the sweets but if we took one he would say, “Bastard!”

Stanley and quite a few of the other boys would give up things for lent. Stanley would always give up things that he didn’t really like a huge amount.

I have been practicing the fasts with the opposite idea in mind. Thus, I continued the news fast through a primary which I would normally be spending glued to the TV. At this moment I am doing a TV fast and soon my 24 hours of not watching the TV will be over but Friday evenings are my favorite night of TV lots of great shows on KCET our local PBS station. So I may continue he fast until tomorrow morning. Remember the purpose of these fasts is give us more choices.

Since I did my news fast I spend way less time on the news and I m just as aware of what is going on in the world. After the speed fast I am driving a little slower and saving fuel while decreasing my chances of getting a ticket and of course I am ingesting way less salt.

As I wrote in my double entendre title the hardest (fasts and any other test of will power) are the best (most effective).

The above is another of the old lost posts (written about eighteen month ago I imagine but the sentiments are just as valid. When improving your will power the most difficult tasks are the best. When you set goals they should be challenging and yet not so challenging that you would not even bother. As a news junkie I can go without news for a week or two or without much news for a long time (as I’m practicing right now). But if I tried to go with no news for six months that would be too much for me and I would give up before even starting.
