Don’t hurry — don’t worry
Posted Under: old post, peace of mind, peaceful life
When I was eleven I went from Iran to England to continue my education. I went to boarding school in Seaford Sussex. I had a guardian who looked after us (my sisters and me) when my parents were in Iran.
My father tended to be anxious when going to catch a train or airplane. He always wanted to be there in plenty of time. Our guardian Mr. Hart was an old English gentleman who had served time in the Foreign Service when Britain had still been “great.”
He had a refrain whenever we would go to catch the train from Victoria station to Seaford. My father would be worried that we would be late. Mr Hart kept saying, “Don’t hurry. Don’t worry.” In fact he was always right. We always reached the train on time.
And today as I was driving slowly in my “speed fast” I was remembering Mr. Hart. I was late going to a meeting and normally I would have become so anxious and I would be speeding and be afraid of the police radar and getting a ticket.
Today, since I was on my speed fast and was not allowed to speed I just calmed down and decided not to worry and not to hurry. As it happened the meeting (which is a weekly meeting) started late (it always starts late – and even so people walk in twenty thirty minutes late) and I was on time this time I had no anxiety and walked into the meeting relaxed rather than my typical slightly flustered self.
