Make a gratitude list
Earlier I mentioned that it is best to start the day with a positive attitude. One way of starting the day on the right foot is to ask yourself what you are thankful for and make a gratitude list. Now you may say, “Look here DoctorJay, it may be easy for you to be happy and thankful but I just (now put in your own excuse) and I have nothing to be thankful for.”
And I’m tellinhg you, “I know you have nothing to be thankful for but imagine you had lots of things to be thankful for and then what would you be thankful for?”
I’m going to make a small list that many people can be thankful for:
- You, like me, are alive and think about it the majority of living beings which have ever lived on earth are not alive. In fact most like dinaosars and dodos are no longer extict. Take a deep breath in consciously being aware of being alive and thank God, nature, the universe, your inner self or whatever you think has given you this most wonderful gift: life.
- The chances are that you own a car. Do you realize that even Queen Victoria of Great Britain whose empire was so large that the sun never set on it could not have a car a hundred and twenty years ago. And in case you don’t have a car be thankful that buses and other modes of public transportation exist.
- If you are reading this be thankful for the computer you are using and the Internet which allows us to communicate with each other. Do you realize it is possible for anyone to go to one of many free blog sites and get a blog and start writing. This is total democracy of ideas in action.
- I’m thankful that in spite of all the conflicts going on in the world more people are living in peace than ever before. There are more people going to bed each night with full belies than before. Human beings are living longer everywhere in the world and childhood mortality is going down.
- I’m thankful for the improvement in electronics which has given us so many “toys” straight out of science fiction: computers, cell phones, gps…. the list is endless.
- I’m thankful for all the people I have ever had in my life (and each morning I concentrate on a few). Of course there are some people that I always thank the creator for bringing into my life but that list is private. I am also thankful for the people who I imagine harmed me. Here gratitude get’s subtle and moves into forgiveness which is the linchpin of Transformative Imagination which is what I call my change work. The point is that people you imagine have harmed you have been your teachers and so long as you can forgive them may in time make you a better person.
This last one of people, pets and even things I own and used to own is very long for me so each day I write at least ten in my journal. And just now I’m exceedingly thankful for you my readers. So get your journal and start writing a gratitude list.
Thank you and God bless you for reading this post. Have a most happy, sucessful, prosperous day.
