How to manage your weight during the hollidays

On average Americans gain twenty five pounds between thanks giving and mid January while we loose about twenty pounds on average in the following time to next thank giving. Which means we gain five pounds a year on average.
Now, given that many of us don’t gain much if any extra weight each year those who do in fact may gain much more than those average five pounds a year.
So which group do you want to be in?
- Those who manage their weight within a narrow band…
- Those who lose hundreds of pounds in their life time of yo-yo dieting only to gain much more ending up being obese and struggling with their weight issues all the time.
hopefully the question was rhetorical – in fact the clue is in keeping your weight in a narrow band. Those who manage their weight well, weigh themselves often and take counter measures as soon as they notice any weight increase above that narrow band.
So during the holidays those of us who manage our weight well start controlling our eating habit as soon as we notice the pointer on that scale going above a certain point. We feel uncomfortable and then comes weight reduction tecniques like:
- Drinking more water.
- Eating more vegetables and fruits.
- Increasing fiber intake.
- Exercising more.
- Eating less sugar (smaller portions of holiday desert).
- Eating lower glycemic index foods – start the meal with low glycemic index foods like lean meat, nuts, non-fat plain yogurt…
- Drinking more tea.
Most importantly doing whatever works best for you. Those of us who manage our weight well understand our own physiology and know that we are each unique individuals with unique needs.
I did a cleansing fast after thanksgiving and will do another on after the new year. Now, fasts are no good as a general weight loss mechanism but they can work to counter rapid weight gain after overdoing it for the holidays.
But many people cannot do full zero calorie fasts like I do but can do juice fasts or other types of fasts. The real thing is that if you take immediate action quick weight gain may be followed by rapid weight loss using your favorite method. However, if you allow that rapid weight gain to settle down on you then your weight set point may increase and reducing that weight will be difficult.
