Necessity plus Serendipity
Necessity may be the mother of invention but serendipity is often the father. For example Penicillin was discovered by Fleming through the serendipitous fact that Fleming did not have enough lab technicians to clean his petri dishes immediately (perhaps that’s a necessity). Later on when it came time to wash the petri dishes most scientists would have just washed them without even looking at the used dishes.
However, Fleming was curious and he noticed that some of the bacteria in the growth had died and he wanted to know why. In time this curiosity led to discovery of Penicillin and it’s later isolation by Chain and Florey saved millions of people in Second World War and continues saving people to this day.
I heard the above story from my Professor Sir Ernst B. Chain, who won his Nobel prize with Fleming and Florey in 1945.
Recently I have had many different website problems. These necessities forced me to find solutions. However, there was one problem which was very challenging and no matter what I did, I could not find he solution.
Then I had an apparent disaster and one of my websites disappeared. It went to the Internet twilite zone. At first I was pretty downharted. But slowly this forced me to take risks (I had nothing to lose) and in time I discovered a solution which led me to solve the main problem I had been struggling with for about three months.
I had asked all sorts of “gurus” on how to do this task and no one had the answer. I had bought or tried different programs (from free to a thousand dollars) to no avail. However, the serendipity of losing the website to hosting limbo led to the solution I had been searching for.
Now today, I received a message from my hosting company that I have 450,000 files on my server and I’m only allowed to have 50000. I have fourteen days to become in compliance with my hosting company. Now I started deleting all the unneeded files and soon noticed that this was going to be an impossible task.
So I did one of the best solutions to being stuck. I went for a walk and allowed my mind to wander and look for the silver lining in the cloud. I’m still working on it. In fact I do have a partial solution which may allow me to make a product. So I’m going for another walk and leting serdipidity happen….
