Why being overweight is unhealthy

  • You have more weight to carry and that stresses your heart, muscles and skeletal system.
  • Excess weight raises insulin levels and can lead to diabetes and high blood pressure. Both of these are bad for your cardiovascular system and increase your chances of having heart attacks and strokes.
  • Obesity raised LDL (bad) cholesterol and lowers HDL (good) cholesterol. This increases your propensity toward heart disease.
  • Your hormonal system can become unbalanced. In women that increases your chances of getting breast and endometrial cancers and menstrual irregularities. Of course your sex life will not be as good if you are overweight (men and women) thanks to this hormonal imbalance. And men may develop breasts.
  • There risks of developing gallstones, arthritis, sleep apnea and other sleep disorders.
  • Of course, one of the worst aspects of obesity is that it lowers your self esteem and when you are over weight you don’t feel like exercising and you get into a negative cycle.

Personal note: I used to suffer from sleep apnea and would wake up in the middle of the night breathless (my breathing would have stopped for long enough to wake me up) and in a panic attack. Once I reduced my weight by twenty pounds I stopped my sleep and apnea and have never had it since.

Many of the above disadvantages are reversible. There have been many studies which show lowering your weight can reduce effects of some types of diabetes better than drugs:

Insulin, the primary treatment for diabetes, is known to cause weight gain in diabetic patients, in part because insulin acts on the fat storage cells to block the breakdown and promote more storage of these fats.

Diabetes mellitus is one of the most common and devastating ailments of our time and is usually cured by losing weight. Most of the treatment recommendations for diabetes from our doctors and the pharmaceutical industry mention weight loss as a good idea, but focus mainly on the drugs that are prescribed to bring down the blood sugar.
