Pharmaceutical prices

I had to fill a prescription for my wife and our co-payment was going to be two hundred and sixty dollars. We decided to not get them and wait until Monday when the physician will prescribe cheaper stuff.

American pharmaceutical prices are the higest by far in the world. Many years ago before I came to the USA and became a citizen, I worked for a pharmaceutical company in Iran. I did not believe our American partners when they told us that the prices we were paying for the drugs deliversd in Iran were much lower than the wholesale prices in the USA.

Earlier when I was taking my B.Sc. (B.S. in American English – I went to university in England) in chemistry and my M.Sc. in biochemistry, I had heard that most of the research done by the pharmaceutical companies was done to break the other company’s patents or retain their own.

Now that I have been living here for such a long time I know that both of those statements are true:

• We pay more for our pharmaceuticals than in any other nation in the word. I wonder why?
• Most of the research done by the pharma conglomerates is for patent busting or retention. When you make a new drug, you have seventeen years of patent protection. From day one the corporations start developing the next drug, and lo and behold after seventeen years the drug which was by prescription only is available over the counter.
  In other countries drugs are by prescription only for medical reasons and not for commercial reasons as in the USA.
  Moreover, often the new drug is less efficacious than the previous one. At times it has been dangerous and ended up killing  people.
  However, and this again is only allowed in the USA, the big pharma companies advertise to lay people hawking their drugs to lay people.
  As well as the degrees mentioned I have done three years of biochemical research, worked for a pharmaceutical company for little while. My father was a surgeon as is my brother in law. And I am totally clueless on which drug is good and which is bad. I have the skill to read the research papers and understand the research but not the time. In fact most physicians don’t have the time to study the research which often is tainted.
  The point is that drug pushing corporations (for that’s what they are) should not be allowed to advertise to lay people on TV.
