Power of intention
Posted Under: ease of life, hypnosis, meditation
I just returned from having my teeth and gum cleaned. This is very painful for me if I do not use a strong analgesic or anesthesia (typically nitrous oxide). Recently I have been using self hypnosis, after all I decided that if I can help others mange their pain, I should control my own.
It took me a while to decide to not use any analgesics or anesthesia. The reason was that I did not want to loose confidence in my capabilities as a hypnotherapist.
Anyway, today was the second time that I went totally solo with no help from even a topical analgesic.
My mouth was feeling good (not numb). I was aware that the hygienist was digging into my mouth. It is just that I feel no pain – perhaps a minor discomfort.
When you are in a trance you lose your sense of time, so I don’t know how long it took. Suddenly my nose started itching a huge amount. No matter what I did I could not stop it itching. So I asked the hygienist to stop. I scratched my nose and said, “Pain is easy – itching is hard.”
We laughed a lot and then I rehypnotized myself and this time added the intention of ignoring any itches and rest of the teeth cleaning went without a hitch.
Afterward I was thinking about the effects of intention. If I had originally thought about It I would have just intended to not to be bothered by any safe sensation (that was if the dentists office was to have burned down I would have been bothered by it and come out of the trance).
So here I’m not just writing about avoiding negative self suggestions (a freind entered a changing room in Nordstrom and said to herself about her expensive ring, “Watch me lose my ring,” and of course when she got home she noticed that she had lost her ring) but about giving yourself positive suggestions like, “Watch me ace this exam.”
I’m writing an iphone/ipad self improvement app. I need you help:
Please email me with suggestions of features you would like to see in a self improvement app.
