Do a salt fast

This an old post which had been totally lost but I just managed to find it. So here goes – salt fast :
For the next 24 hours do not consume any salt which is not in a natural food. So that means do not add any salt to any food and check the contents of everything you eat to make sure it has no added salt (sodium). To be realistic that means absolutely no processed foods at all in the next 24 hours.
Remember when you read labels remember sodium means salt.
I have recently cut down my salt input and have not been adding any salt to my food however I had been adding a salsa picante hot sauce to some of my vegetables. I just checked it and it has salt as has the cottage cheese but the yogurt and the tofu that I eat a lot of do not appear to have any salt. As I am doing these fasts I notice more and more that they make one more aware.
In each case we have to be careful and sensitive to our surroundings.

It’s been a while since I wrote the above. My blood pressure is back to normal and I’m consuming way too much sodium. It is time to do this fast again.
I wish to add some extra information about salt. After oxygen and water salt is the substance that you need consistently – that’s to say if you receive no oxygen you cannot live for more than a few minutes. In case of total lack of water it’s a matter of very few weeks before you pass away and in the case of salt it is a matter of months. In fact salt is so important to our health that the Roman soldiers used to receive a salary (a ration of salt) as part of their remuneration and our English word salary comes from that Latin root.
However, just because a little of something is good for you does not mean that more will be better. Living beings are well balanced organisms and need just the right amount of any nutrient.
But because salt is necessary and was lacking in our ancestors’ hunter gatherer diet, it tastes so good. Now, big food conglomerates (purveyors of junk mostly) add huge amounts of salt to everything we eat, damaging our health.
