Shut up please and improve your relationships
Posted Under: peace of mind, positive emotions, psychology, relationship
Yesterday I got home a bit tired after donating blood. I wanted to take it easy (it was Saturday) but there were plumbers and other workmen in the house. I felt a bit miffed as I was exiled to the bedroom and could not work on my computer. I was about to say something to my wonderful wife when I knew that I should best shut up.
Everyone else in the house had been working hard all day and I was annoyed for no real reason, and if I had said anything, my wife would have said something back, and that would have pushed my hot button and then…
So I stayed quite.
The real interesting thing is that by not verbalizing my annoyance it became temporary. Very soon I forgot about it and was calm and rested in the bedroom and watched an interesting play on video that I enjoyed. I didn’t work on the computer and that’s OK.
Too often we talk too much, or altogether communicate too much – road rage comes to mind. It is interesting how quickly anger and annoyance can dissipate when not acted out. When someone does something wrong in front of you on the road, demonstrating even the slightest anger starts road rage which soon starts a life of its own and the negative emotions and energy increase. However, if you take a deep breath, pause and bless the other your anger and annoyance disappears and you keep your peace of mind.
Even more importantly, improve your relationships by saying way fewer negative things, shutting up when angered and singing the praise of others when happy and loving.
