Smile meditation

I discovered this form of meditation accidentally this morning when I was moving twelve stones from one side of the garden to the other and back as an exercise of discipline and will power.

In many types of meditation one concentrates on some object of concentration and eventually notices that one is no longer concentrating and moves awareness back to that object without any blame.

Thus in mantra meditation one concentrates on a word or phrase (mantra or mantram) by repeating it over and over and eventually one notices that one is thinking and one says to oneself, “Thinking,” and restarts repeating the mantra.

In the smile meditation you smile for a set period of time. This causes your brain to secrete endorphins and  serotonin and makes you feel happy for no reason which is the best reason to feel happy. In time you may notice that you are no longer smiling. When you notice that start smiling again.

Holding a smile, makes smiling natural for you. So that way your smile becomes more natural to you. It is a matter of muscle memory.

It is important to understand that the mind/body/soul/spirit is one and your physiology (way you hold yourself, what you eat, how you breath, and so on) affects your mind and what you think affects your physiology. By using your will power to affect one in a positive direction you affect the other in a positive direction.

Sometimes it is easier to change your thoughts but often it is much easier to affect your body in a positive way.

Thus if you are angry or anxious take a few deep breaths; if you lack confidence, hold yourself erect in a confident pose; and if you feel down, smile. Much better still every now and again do all three simultaneously. Make it a habit.
