Take positive action – any positive action

There are times when you are disappointed and things are not quite going right. In fact there are times you may wonder, “Good God, what next?” as things continue to go wrong and no matter what you do and have a small victory something else goes wrong. It is exactly at these times that we should act – we should move toward a positive goal.

Often at times of extreme adversity we get paralyzed and do nothing. We may mope around and eat a lot of wrong (high caloric high glycemic index fatty) foods. It is at exactly these times that it is best for us to do something positive. For example we can go for a short walk, or we could clean some clutter, or read a few pages of a book we had promised ourselves we would one day read.

Another thing we may do is to meditate or center ourselves. It is exactly at those times that we don’t feel like centering ourselves that prayer, self hypnosis, meditation, breathing exercise or whatever centering method we use is needed more than any other time.

Smiling and being happy when things are going well is easy. It is exactly when they are difficult that they are needed. Of course we should smile when we are happy but we should also smile when we are not happy. Smiling, better yet laughing, releases endorphins in our brains and makes us happy.

Breathing deep gets life giving oxygen into our blood and brain and relaxes us. Concentrating on the breath is a wonderful way of centering ourselves. Counting the breaths is an easy way of concentrating on the breath. Sit down comfortably, close your eyes, and  with your back straight, count your breath fron one to ten. If you lose count start again from one. When reach ten, start again from one.

This is the simplest form of Zazen (Zen sitting medutation). Eventually your mind will wander and you will think of all sorts of things. When you notice that simply bring your mind back to your breath.

So remember to act your way out of feeling bad….
