Do a television fast

A TV fast?

This means no TV of any kind including any DVDs or movies on TV for the next twenty four hours. In my gym they have TV in front of us, I have to think how I can go to the gym and not watch TV. Perhaps I need not to go the gym. There are other forms of exercise than going to the gym.

At the same time I wish to go to the gym. I think the spirit of the fast is that one does not watch TV but if suppose you pass a TV store and inadvertently you look at a screen I don’t think you have broken the fast.

What do you think?

So far this has been a disaster. The gym was alright. I got there at 5:00 a.m. and even though there are six TVs in the gym itself I was half asleep that early in the morning. When I got to the changing room the TV was exceptionally loud so I could not help hearing it. I turned it down and minded my own business. So at least I was keeping the fast in spirit.

At lunch I was with friends and we went to a “sports bar.” Given that I am not into American sports (I love football – the real kind that is played the round ball – and formula one racing) I had never been to a sports bar. There were about twenty TVs all around us. It was impossible to look in any direction without  seeing a TV screen. So the rule is to continue it for another 24 hours. The good thing about these fasts is that they affect one after the fast is complete. I eat way less salt and spend way less time on the news and I drive slower….

I did not go to the gym today and I have now gone for more than 24 hours and no TV. However, I am continuing it. Fridays (today) are my favorite TV day. I typically watch some Sci-Fi channel and much PBS. So this the day to go against my habit and not watch any TV. That’s when these types of fasts are most effective.

Saturday morning, and I did not watch the TV last night and I had a great time. I have everything recorded (presumably) and I am in no great hurry to go and see them. I will see them in time. As I keep repeating I find these fasts release one from the habit of having to do things without even thinking about it.

Thus I had the habit of watching TV every Friday evening. I had to watch the “News Hour” and “Washing Week” live even in the middle of dinner although I always say in my seminars that one should eat and enjoy the companionship but never do anything else like watching the TV, working on the computer and especially bad is driving the car while eating. That last eating while doing something else no only gets you fat but more importantly could cause an accident.

Now I know I am free of that habit.

This is another of those old posts. I notice that I’m not free of the old habit of eating in front of the television. I do it much less than before I did this fast the first time. I think it is good to do these fasts every now and then to improve one’s will power and to restore good habits of avoiding things one should avoid (salt, gossip and so on).
