Watch some young children at play and boost your self esteem
Posted Under: Success, old post, self esteem, spirituality
Self esteem is based on how confident you feel at skills that you care about. Thus I love maths and I am excellent at it. This improves my self esteem. I’m atrocious at spelling (I’m dyslexic) but this does not bother me since from early childhood I did nor think spelling is an important skill. I’m sure if I was not dyslexic and was good at it I would have considered it as very important.
So perhaps one trick to improve your esteem is to care more about things you excel in and less in things that you do not.
Note there are two types of self esteem:
- Trait – this is how you think you are in the long term. It is your general overall self esteem. It is more difficult to shift this.
- State – this goes up and down depending on what’s going on in your life. The posts in this series improve your momentary state self esteem. There are research studies which show that when you continually have a higher state self esteem it translates to a higher trait self esteem. It is like developing a good habit.
When you look after your mind/body/soul/spirit you are telling yourself that you matter. When you appreciate anything that thing appreciates as well as your sense of well being increasing. When you do anything you enjoy your self esteem improves.
So finally we get to the old post from eleven years ago:
Watch some young children at play and boost your self-esteem
All babies are born with an extremely high self-esteem. As we grow up we hear many more “nos” than “yeses”. This because our parents love us and the world is a very precarious dangerous place. There are so many pitfalls in front of a newborn baby that it is a sheer miracle that any human being lives to become an adult. Slowly our natural self-esteem is diminished by a harsh environment.
When we watch young children at play, we can remember that earlier time of innocence and natural exuberance. We have an instinct of desiring to protect children and this alone causes us to become happy whenever we see babies of any species. Thus watching kittens or puppies at play can also help boost our self-esteem.
