What is fruit juice concentrate?
Posted Under: diets, food, health tips, healthy diet
Many people, like me, refuse to buy any thing which has sugar as one of the first three ingredients. We know that sugar is called many different things:
- sugar
- cane sugar
- fructose
- corn syrup
- high fructose corn syrup
- sucrose
- glucose
- dextrose (D-glucose)
- invert sugar
And many other names. What I did not know is that at times the food manufacturers use the term fruit juice concentrate for sugar. As you know many fruit juices have a lot of sugars and if you take out all the goodness out of the juice (first the fiber to give the juice, then all the flavor, color, and other unique chemicals to that juice) you are left with sugar water. Next concentrate that and you get fruit juice concentrate – another name for sugar.
Now why would you do that?
To fool "health nuts," like me, in thinking there’s much less refined sugar in the food than there really is.
And why do they want to use all that sugar?
Sugar has an even flavor (unlike the fruite juice which is not so consistant) and consistancy is a great part of modern artificial food manufacturing and marketing. It may taste crap – but it’s the same crap day in day out whether you buy it in Los Anglese, New York, London, Paris, Beijing or Tehran.
Moreover, sugar is addictive and hydes the tase of all the other junk put into manufactured food.
So next time you read that food label be even more careful and make sure there’s no concentrated fruite juice in the first three ingredients. You can also check to see the total carbohydrates relative to the other ingredients (the good complex carbs vs. the bad simple sugar carbs).
