What is your largest organ?

The answer is simple:

It’s your skin

Your skin is not simply a barrier between the rest of your body and the external world. It does much more than keep the inside in and stop foreign bodies from invading.

It is an organ which keeps you temperature constant by increasing or decreasing water evaporation by sweating more or less. At the same time the capillaries in your skin open up (you flush or blush) so you radiate more heat through your skin. When you are cold on the other hand they constrict and allow less blood near your skin and you become "blue" due to lack of blood near the skin surface.

The skin is one of the best organs of detoxification. It removes the waste products and it even breaths and of course it keeps in what needs to stay in, and keeps out what needs to stay out. Moreover it produces vitamin D.

The skin is full of sense nerves (neurons) and hence we have the sense of touch. I’ll come back to this later on. It is also used as a signaling organ. We blush, our lips become fuller, internally we tingle to either communicate with others or with ourselves.

Even when we are not consciously aware of the signals we give out and receive, our unconscious understands and there are we people we like from the first moment we meet and others we feels less kindly towards.

For today I want to write about the sense of touch as a sense of deep enjoyment, well being and health. All mammals need to be touched – need to be petted. We need hugs – hugs from loved ones – hugs from strangers – hugs from any one.

When we touch we are touched as well – it’s a two way affair – our immune system improves, our blood pressure goes down and we improve our health as well as the quality of our lives.

We live with some wonderful companion cats (if you live with cats you know that perhaps the cats own the humans but no no human ever owned a cat). It gives us great pleasure to pet and groom them. It is wonderful to be relaxing and have one of the cats sleeping on top of us.

Holding hands is a great way to bond and unfortunately in most cultures this human need ts mixed up with sexuality. In most societies unrelated people of opposite gender do not hold hand if not romantically involved but in many societies same sexed friends may hold hands as a sign of friendship.

Societies like ours which kiss less (in Europe you kiss both cheeks and in the Middle East it’s three kisses), hold hands less and hug less are missing out on one of the best natural healers. So hold hands more and hug more without it being sexual and improve your health.
