Yesterday I wrote that you could be happy by being happy – happiness is a state of being and not of having as many imagine. I mentioned that meditation is a great way of getting in touch with your inner truth and to be happy.

So what is this meditation business?

Meditation is a way of quietening your mind and allowing peace and serenity in. There are many different ways of meditating but each method makes you more aware of the present moment and has similar health effects.

The health and other beneficial effects of meditation include:

  • Getting rid of or lowering effects of stress.
  • Allowing you to go to sleep easier.
  • Reducing negative emotions such as anger, jealousy, and resentment.
  • Increases your loving kindness and generosity to others and yourself.
  • Makes you more spiritual.
  • Makes you relaxed and more peaceful.
  • Lowers blood pressure.

There are many other benefits and different meditation techniques may be good for specific things.

The basic principle of the how to of meditation is the same: you concentrate on something (a word, a candle, your breath, your walk, how you are eating). You do not try to do anything and sooner or later your mind will wonder from the object of concentration and you simply return you mind back to the object of concentration.

There is no blame – just noticing that you are no longer concentrating on the object – you may observe thinking, itching, or whatever you are doing when you notice you are no longer concentrating.

As far as where, when, and how (posture) you do mediation – you can do it anywhere, anytime, eyes closed eyes open, in fact anyway you want.

Later on I’ll write about the different techniques of meditation.

Before I end this post I wish to add that there is nothing magical about Transcendental Meditation. It is just a commercialized mantra meditation technique. And unlike what they claim the Maharishi effect is a load of bull (technical term) and it is not scientific or for everyone. I’ll teach you how to do mantra meditation in another post and you can do it without cost.

Finally, different meditation methods work for different people at different times in their life’s journey. You can try the different methods for a few days and see which you like and which you do not.
