Why Michelangelo Weight Management Seminar?
Posted Under: Michelangelo Weight Management Seminar, forgiveness, teaching story
Many years ago I had the good fortune to be studying Chemistry under the Nobel prize winner, Sir Derick Barton, at Imperial College, London. The nearest underground station was South Kensington and we would walk up Exhibition Road to the Chemistry department.
There was an underground tunnel which went part of the way and typically if it was raining (as is the norm in England) we would walk in the tunnel. However, at times I would be walking the other side of the road and if it started raining would dash into the Victoria and Albert museum for shelter.
At this time I was a typical pure scientist (nerd and a half – now only half a nerd) and did not appreciate the arts, music, theater and so on. One day I was escaping the rain and I was early for the lecture in the second law of thermodynamics when I wandered away from my normal shortest path from the South entrance of the museum to the North exist.
Suddenly in front of me there was a most beautiful site. It was tall, white and out of this world. It filled me (the absolute materialist) with awe. I had a shiver on my backbone with the sense of wonder….
I went toward the description and it said:
David: by Michelangelo di Lodovico Buonarroti Simoni
I could not stay that long in that first encounter. Later I read more of the description and discovered that this was in fact a gypsum replica of the real David in marble which is in Naples (I believe).
Later I studied the story of how this masterpiece came about. The single slab of marble which became David had been around for a long time and other sculptors did not know what to do with it. It was too long and ungainly.
Michelangelo however, allowed his inner magnificence, his genius to work on the challenge of what to do with marble hunk. He used his transformative imagination to see the beauty deep inside.
Later when David was finished someone asked him how had produced his masterpiece. Michelangelo replied that there was beauty inside the slab of marble all the time. He saw David within. He saw the inner beauty and then once he chipped away whatever was not the inner beauty David emerged.
This to a certain extent is true of many great human creations. The creator gets in touch with the inner magnificence that we each have and becomes a channel for the inner genius. To a certain extent when you get out of the way of your ego, you allow that inner magnificence shine like the star it has always been….
Back to the weight management seminar. I believe inside every person with a weight issue (underweight as well as overweight and people with other eating problems) there is a beautiful person, and all we have to do is to chip away the BS, negative emotions, lack of forgiveness, resentment and so on, and you will allow that beautiful person out….
