Worry fast

Continuing the fasting series we get to the worry fast:

In the next twenty four hours if you notice that you are worrying, simply remind yourself and silently say, “Worrying – cancel, cancel,” and smile.

Note the twenty four hours is only a suggestion depending on your level of comfort you can do this or the other fasts longer or slower.

In previous fasts like the news fast or speed fast you were strengthening your will power as well as your awareness. Thus if you noticed that you broke the fast before the allotted time you would restart it until you had done the amount of time you had decided upon.

However, you cannot consciously decide not to worry. You can be aware of whenever you worry and then decide to stop by concentrating on other feelings and thoughts. Our minds cannot keep two opposing thoughts in consciousness. So if you notice that you are worrying by turning you mind toward positive things in your life you can stop worrying.

So after smiling and silently saying, “Cancel, cancel,” you can ask yourself some good questions like:

  • Who do you love?
  • Who loves you?
  • What are you thankful for?
  • What is your favorite activity?
  • What is your favorite music.

You can also go for a walk or do some activity you enjoy.  Often when we are active and are task oriented our minds turn toward the task and we stop worrying.

Another thing we can note if we become aware of worrying is that most of our worrying comes to naught or are things that we cannot change. Someone calculated that at most eight hours of worrying a year is about real things that we can do something about and suggested that we spend one eight hour day a year doing nothing but worry and let it go for the rest of the year.

If the worry continues we can meditate. Counting breath meditation is a good meditation to counter worry.
