New year’s resolutions
Posted Under: goal achievement, weight loss, will power
Each January all the gyms in the USA are full of new members as people try to lose some of the weight gained over the fattening holidays. By mid February the gyms return to their normal membership.
This happens every year. In fact gyms keep getting new members all the time but very few actually go to the gym on a regular basis. We are all good intentions and very little follow through.
The worst aspect of good intentions comes from artificial goal setting like new year’s resolutions. We resolve to do this and that and when we do not achieve these artificially timed goals we feel so disappointed, we feel that we are losers and so we achieve fewer goals.
By setting unrealistic goals (these resolutions) we teach ourselves that we have weak will powers and we cannot achieve our goals.
Unfortunately our new year’s resolutions are the worst possible types pf goals – we go crazy – we resolve this and resolve that all the time knowing deep down that we have absolutely no intention of keeping those resolutions.
I realize I should have written this post a few days ago but since I did not set a goal of doing so it’s alright.
You see each time you set a goal and you do not achieve that goal you weaken your goal achievement skills. Each time you achieve a goal which is not trivial (too small) you strengthen yourself and become a better goal achiever.
Goals which are challenging but not excessively are the best goals to help you improve your will power and help you achieve your next goals easier.
It seems a perfect time to set a goal of writing a goal achievement series soon.
