According to modern hypnotic research all hypnosis is self-hypnosis and the hypnotist is what I like to call the tour guide. Another important fact you need to be aware of is that hypnosis is like all other skills and the more often you practice the better you become. All hypnosis sessions have the following parts:

Induction
Deepening
Suggestions guided visualization meditation
Re-alerting

There are many different induction methods. The best way to start until you can enter a trance state rapidly is to use progressive relaxation at first. Here you move your attention to various parts of your body and concentrating on those parts relax them. Typically start either at the feet moving up the body until you reach the head or start at top of the head moving down. Like anything else the more you practice this the better and quicker you can enter the trance state. Each time you do a self-hypnosis session give yourself the suggestion that it will be easier to enter a trance the next time and that you will get deeper.

Often it is best if you go to a hypnotherapist for a supervised session first. During this supervised session you can learn how to enter the trance state. Ask the hypnotherapist to give you a suggestion for rapid self-hypnosis induction and that each time you enter the trance state you should go deeper.

A very good way to produce deepening is to count down from ten to zero giving yourself the suggestion that with each number you go down (step of stairs or floors on an elevator) and double your relaxation with each count.

Another excellent deepening technique is to give yourself the suggestion that you will count up from one to three and at the count of three you would open your eyes while remaining as deep as you are. Next you will count down from five to one. At the count of five you will close your eyes and go down ten times deeper and continue to go deeper and deeper until you reach one. Then you may count up to three and repeat. Each time you do this repetition you will continue to go deeper and deeper until a time will come when on the count of three you'll be so deep that you just will not want to open your eyes. Then just count down from five to one one last time and continue to go deeper and deeper into a deep state of safe relaxed trance...

Here you give yourself the suggestions for change or do a guided visualization. I like a guided meditation called the safe space meditation. Here you enter a safe space that you build for yourself. In this space you are protected from the concerns and worries of daily life

In re-alerting you count yourself up giving yourself that you will be fully alert on the count of five thus:
In a moment I am going to count up from one to five and at the count of five you'll be fully alert, well rested as though you've had a full nights sleep....
One coming back to this room...
Two feeling returning to your finger tips and toes....
Three eyelids beginning to open....
Four feeling very happy, safe and secure for no reason at all....
Five eyes open fully alert....
